Cagliari tie down Paul Mendy with contract to 2032
The 19-year-old striker, who scored twice on his first Serie A start, has signed fresh terms as Cagliari bet on a forward they see as a long-term fixture in Fabio Pisacane's attack.
Cagliari have extended Paul Mendy's contract until 30 June 2032, the club confirmed, committing to a 19-year-old centre-forward barely two seasons removed from his arrival in Sardinia.
"Cagliari Calcio are delighted to announce that Paul Mendy has signed a new contract with the Rossoblù, extending his stay at the Club until 30 June 2032," the club said, according to Football Italia.
A rapid rise through Cagliari's ranks
Mendy joined Cagliari from ASC Bambey in February 2025, initially featuring for the Under-18s, where he scored three goals in eight appearances. The promotion to Under-20 level came quickly, and so did the goals: a first brace against Sassuolo on 21 September, then strikes in four straight matches between December and January against Fiorentina, Frosinone, Parma and Roma, followed by another double against Genoa on 1 February.
That form forced Pisacane's hand. Mendy made his senior debut at 19 against Napoli on 20 March 2026, and in his first start, on 27 April, he scored twice in eight minutes to help beat Atalanta 3-2 at the Unipol Domus. He closed the Under-20 campaign with four more goals and two assists, and played a central role in the Primavera 1 relegation play-out, scoring once and setting up two more in a 3-0 win in Naples that kept the age-group side in the division.
The pattern across both levels is consistent: short adaptation periods followed by immediate productivity. A striker who needed only a handful of Under-18 appearances before being fast-tracked to the Under-20s, and only a handful of senior minutes before starting and scoring, is not simply talented but coachable in a way that lets a manager trust him early.
The profile that persuaded Pisacane
This season Mendy has featured in all nine of Cagliari's league matches, scoring in the away win over Atalanta and setting up Daniel Maldini's goal in the 1-1 draw with Juventus. He has also scored in the Coppa Italia, against Hellas Verona.
Cagliari describe him as a modern number nine capable of leading the line alone or acting as a focal point others can play off, while also attacking space in behind and carrying the ball forward himself. That combination matters tactically: a striker who can hold the ball under pressure and bring midfielders into play, but who can equally turn and run into the channels when the defensive line steps up, gives a coach two different ways to attack the same opponent without changing personnel.
The assist for Maldini against Juventus is the clearest evidence of the link-play side of that description, a forward dropping into pockets of space to combine rather than simply finishing moves. The goal against Atalanta, scored on the road, points to the other half of the profile, a striker capable of being the end point of a counter or a direct ball into the forward line.
What the 2032 deal signals
A contract running six years beyond his current age of 19 is a statement of intent rather than a response to transfer interest reported elsewhere. Clubs extend academy graduates this far in advance for two reasons: to protect the asset's value should bigger sides come calling, and to build a squad around a player they expect to still be central to the project in his mid-twenties.
Cagliari's own framing supports the second reading. The club called him "one of the most exciting young talents in Serie A" with "significant room for improvement", language that describes a developing project rather than a finished article being cashed in on. For a Sardinian side that has built its recent squads on exactly this kind of pathway, from Primavera football into senior minutes within a single campaign, Mendy's trajectory is the model working as intended.
The next test is sustaining the scoring rate once opponents start preparing specifically for him. Nine appearances and goals against two of Serie A's more established sides is a promising start to a senior campaign, but it is still a small sample against a league that will adjust once a teenage striker starts appearing on opposition scouting reports.
