Chivu demands grit from an Inter side low on confidence and bodies

Cristian Chivu has told Inter they must match Feyenoord's intensity at De Kuip, with the club already struggling in Europe and reeling from a derby defeat to Milan.

Cristian Chivu has told Inter they face a different, more combative version of Feyenoord on their own ground, and that his side cannot afford to go into Tuesday's Champions League fixture without what he called determination and grit.

The match kicks off at the Stadion De Kuip in Rotterdam at 20.00 GMT, 21.00 CET, with Inter needing a result after a troubled start to this season's European campaign, Football Italia reports.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Chivu described the away atmosphere as a factor Inter must be ready to absorb. "It is a tough environment, the fans give a lot and we know they are a different team at home with intensity, so we must be ready to face adversity and situations we cannot afford to handle without determination and grit," he said.

A back line already stretched before kick-off

Inter travel to Rotterdam without Alessandro Bastoni, suspended after his sending off in the previous Champions League outing against Shakhtar Donetsk, a game Inter won 1-0 while down to ten men, according to Football Italia.

Lautaro Martinez, Curtis Jones, Luis Henrique and John Stones remain unavailable through injury, thinning a squad that was already under scrutiny for its defensive output.

Chivu's call for wing-backs who "need to time the runs properly" points to a specific concern: in a system built around width from deep positions, a mistimed overlap leaves the back line exposed to exactly the kind of transition moments he fears Feyenoord will generate at home.

Losing Bastoni to suspension removes a central piece of that defensive structure, and it is likely no coincidence that Chivu framed this match in terms of adversity rather than tactics alone.

Two defeats already leave no margin in Europe

Inter arrive at this fixture having already lost their opening two Champions League matches, to Real Madrid and to Club Brugge, before squeezing past Shakhtar Donetsk with a numerical disadvantage, per Football Italia's reporting.

That record means a trip to Rotterdam carries more weight than a typical mid-stage group fixture. A third loss would leave Inter's path through the competition considerably harder, and Chivu's language about being "prepared for any situation" reads as an acknowledgement that his side cannot control the occasion, only their response to it.

The timing compounds the pressure. Inter's 3-1 defeat to Milan in the Derby della Madonnina on Saturday has left what the club's own camp described as a mood of concern, and a team low on confidence travelling into a hostile away leg is a different proposition from one riding momentum.

Chivu's insistence on "quality, intensity both defending and attacking" suggests he is asking his players to solve two problems at once: restoring defensive discipline after a leaky run of form, while still generating enough from attacking positions, particularly through those wing-back runs and service into the strikers, to make the trip worthwhile.

Spence's rehabilitation and the weekend still to come

Djed Spence's recovery is one of the few positive threads in Inter's recent story. Having missed months of action after representing England at the World Cup, he has become a regular starter again, and Chivu used the pre-match comments to confirm his fitness in explicit terms: "Spence is ready to play another 90 minutes of quality."

That assurance matters given the squad's current injury list. With four senior players unavailable, Chivu has limited room to manage minutes, and a fully fit Spence able to play a complete match reduces one source of selection strain heading into a congested stretch.

That stretch does not end in Rotterdam. Inter face Como this weekend in what Football Italia describes as an encounter already taking on the feel of a Scudetto showdown, meaning however Tuesday's Champions League trip resolves, there is no pause to recover before the next examination of where this Inter side stands domestically.

The combination of a tightening European group, a derby defeat still fresh, and a title race intensifying at home leaves Chivu's demand for grit as more than a pre-match soundbite. It reads as the operating instruction for a squad that currently has little slack to work with.
