Juventus and Napoli reshuffle under pressure as injuries bite both sides
Luciano Spalletti and a stand-in Napoli bench pick makeshift XIs at the Allianz Stadium, with Nick Woltemade and Randal Kolo Muani paired up front and Kevin De Bruyne forced deeper for the visitors.
Juventus host Napoli at the Allianz Stadium with both teams patched together by absence and both coaches operating under scrutiny, according to Football Italia.
Spalletti picks Woltemade and Kolo Muani as his front two, with Kerim Alajbegovic played in behind them, Lloyd Kelly replacing Federico Gatti, and the back line built around Kalulu, Bremer and Lucumi.
Napoli come without Rasmus Hojlund, who has picked up flu symptoms that had already affected Amir Rrahmani, so Lorenzo Lucca leads the line and Luca Marianucci gets a rare start in defence, Football Italia reports.
Spalletti still can't settle on a shape
The team sheet does not resolve the question of what system Juventus are actually playing, and Football Italia's own report flags the ambiguity: this could read as a 3-5-2, a 3-4-1-2, a 3-4-3 or a 4-3-1-2 depending on how McKennie, Cabal and Alajbegovic are asked to behave once the ball moves.
That uncertainty matters more than the label itself. A back three with McKennie and Cabal pushed high as wing-backs gives Juventus width and a spare man at the back to cover Kolo Muani and Woltemade's movement up front, but it also asks two converted or makeshift wide players to cover the full length of the pitch without rest.
If Spalletti instead flattens the back three into a back four, with Alajbegovic tucking inside behind the strikers, Juventus get more defensive security through the centre at the cost of attacking spread.
Either way, the presence of two out-and-out forwards in Woltemade and Kolo Muani signals intent to commit numbers up front after a run of three defeats in the last four league games and a draw at Cagliari, a sequence that has left Spalletti facing calls for his job following the 2-0 loss at Genoa in midweek.
Napoli's midfield is being rebuilt out of necessity
Napoli's selection is shaped almost entirely by their treatment room. Stanislav Lobotka's ankle injury from the midweek win at Monza rules him out for at least six weeks, and with Badiashile, Spinazzola, Neres, Santos, Favasuli and Buongiorno already sidelined, Max Allegri's side had no alternative but to push Kevin De Bruyne into the deeper playmaking role he does not relish, flanked by Scott McTominay and Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa.
That double pivot of McTominay and Anguissa either side of De Bruyne changes what Napoli can do in build-up. De Bruyne dropping deep gives Napoli a technically superior outlet to break the first line of pressure, but it removes him from the pockets further forward where his passing has produced goals this season, including the penalty he converted against Frosinone.
McTominay and Anguissa are asked to cover more ground as a result, shielding a back line reorganised around Marianucci and shifting Di Lorenzo and Olivera into the full-back positions either side of him.
Politano and Lang provide the width in support of Lucca, who leads the attack with Hojlund unavailable, while Alex Meret returns in goal.
Two coaches with their former clubs watching closely
Both benches carry symbolism that Football Italia's build-up makes explicit: Spalletti and Allegri are each facing the clubs they used to manage, and neither is short of outside pressure.
Allegri himself is absent from the touchline, serving the second match of a two-game ban, which leaves Marco Landucci in his place for the evening.
For Juventus, the stakes are immediate. A fourth defeat in five league matches would deepen the questions already being asked after Genoa, a result Football Italia describes as humiliating given Genoa's position in the relegation battle.
For Napoli, the task is managing a midfield and defence stripped of several first-choice names while still protecting the form of players like Anguissa and McTominay who have had to absorb extra defensive responsibility.
The match kicked off at 19.45 GMT at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, with both sides fielding what amount to emergency selections rather than first-choice elevens.
