Scalvini returns as Sarri rotates again amid Atalanta's injury crunch

Giorgio Scalvini is back in Atalanta's defence against Parma, but Maurizio Sarri's threadbare squad and Alberto Gilardino's low block make this a tighter test than the table suggests.

Giorgio Scalvini has returned to Atalanta's back line for Sunday's Serie A match against Parma at the New Balance Arena, with Giovanni Fabbian coming into the Parma midfield for the injured Adrián Bernabé and Simone Lontani paired with El Bilal Touré up front, Football Italia reported.

The sides meet with contrasting recent form but shared problems. Atalanta sit 11th on 11 points and have not won at home since beating Venezia on 12 October, drawing 4-4 with Frosinone in their last home outing before a 2-2 draw at Fiorentina, where Charles De Ketelaere and Nicola Zalewski scored. Parma are in the relegation zone on five points, and Gilardino is still without a win since replacing Carlos Cuesta at the end of September; Wednesday's goalless draw with Udinese, in which Bernabé had a penalty saved, was his first point after three straight defeats.

Why Sarri's selection is shaped by absence, not preference

Atalanta's line-up reads as much as a casualty list as a tactical plan. Sarri has only 19 fit players to call upon, with Raoul Bellanova, Gianluca Scamacca, Giacomo Raspadori, Sead Kolašinac, Franck Kessié, Isak Hien, Odilon Kossounou and Pompei all unavailable, and Gianluca Gaetano and Thomas Kristensen added to the injury list this week after picking up strains in Florence, according to Football Italia.

That depletion explains Scalvini's recall. With Hien and Kossounou both sidelined, Sarri needs recognised centre-backs even if match sharpness is a question after a lengthy absence. Flanked by Zappacosta and Bernasconi in a back four, Scalvini's reintegration is less a tactical upgrade than a structural necessity — Atalanta simply do not have enough bodies to rest him.

The shape in front of him, a 4-2-3-1 with Pašalić and Ederson forming the double pivot, is built to funnel possession through midfield and release Rowe, De Ketelaere and Zalewski into the half-spaces behind Krstović. That front four has carried Atalanta's recent output — De Ketelaere and Zalewski were the scorers in the midweek draw at Fiorentina — but the same profligacy that produced four goals conceded against Frosinone suggests the pivot has been overrun when Atalanta lose the ball in advanced areas.

Parma's low block is designed to exploit exactly that pattern

Sarri has explicitly flagged Parma's defensive setup as the danger, warning his players not to underestimate a side anchored in a low block that looks to break quickly once it regains possession, Football Italia reported. Gilardino's 3-5-2 — Drobnič, Troilo and Delprato screening Daffara, with Britschgi and Valeri providing the width as wing-backs and Fabbian, Sierro and Keita occupying the centre — is set up to compress space centrally and deny Atalanta's front four the time they typically get to combine.

The pairing of Lontani and Touré up front gives Parma two out-and-out forwards to aim for on transitions rather than a single reference point, which matters against a back four that will push Zappacosta and Bernasconi high to support the wide attacking midfielders. If Atalanta's full-backs are caught upfield when possession turns over, the space in behind Obrić and Scalvini becomes the route Gilardino's side will look to use.

Parma's recent results support the idea that they are more dangerous in moments than across ninety minutes: three straight losses either side of a 2-1 win over Genoa, followed by a goalless draw against Udinese that, while not a victory, was the first time in weeks Gilardino's defence had kept a clean sheet against a settled opposition.

What the absences mean beyond Sunday

The timing of Atalanta's injuries, with Gaetano and Kristensen both expected to be sidelined until after the international break, means Sarri's selection headaches will not be resolved by this fixture alone. A club already missing eight senior players cannot easily rotate its way through a congested run, and that raises the stakes on games like this one, where squad depth rather than tactical sophistication may decide outcomes.

For Parma, Bernabé's withdrawal after a training-ground muscle complaint on Sunday removes the player who took their penalty in midweek, and Fabbian's introduction changes the profile of their central midfield — a more conventional box-to-box presence replacing a player who had been operating closer to the forwards in recent weeks.

Neither side has a player suspended for the match, and Elphege's return to the Parma squad following appendicitis surgery offers Gilardino a small boost in depth even if he is unlikely to feature from the start. Atalanta's next assignment comes after the international break, by which point Gaetano and Kristensen are expected back in contention, giving Sarri a fuller squad to work with than the one available against Parma.
