Como's attack thins out as Diao joins Kean on the sidelines

Cesc Fabregas confirmed Assane Diao will miss two to three weeks with a muscle injury, leaving Como short in attack as they visit Fiorentina off the back of their first Champions League defeat.

Cesc Fabregas has confirmed that Assane Diao will be out for two to three weeks with a muscular injury, a blow that lands as Como try to steady themselves after their first Champions League defeat of the season, Football Italia reports.

Diao limped off during the 3-2 loss away to Feyenoord last week, having opened the scoring before going off. He now joins Moise Kean, who did not travel to Rotterdam after picking up a knee problem on international duty with Italy, on Como's injury list.

Fabregas told the club's official channels, via Tuttomercatoweb, that Kean needs "a week or 10 days" to recover fully, while Diao's issue is harder to pin down. "Assane had a little muscular injury that is hard to evaluate, they tell me two to three weeks," he said.

Two attacking outlets missing at once

Losing Diao and Kean together removes both of Como's primary routes into the box inside the same fortnight. Diao has operated as a wide forward capable of cutting inside off the right, the kind of inverted-winger profile that gives a front line its direct ball-carrying threat in transition. Kean, by contrast, is the central reference point whose movement in behind opens the channels those wide players attack.

Without either, Fabregas has to rebuild his attacking structure rather than simply swap one name for another. The pressing triggers Como use higher up the pitch typically rely on a front line coordinated enough to win the ball back quickly after losing it; stripping out two first-choice attackers at once disrupts that coordination, even if the system itself stays the same on the whiteboard.

That makes the next two fixtures a genuine test of squad depth rather than tactics alone. Fabregas said he hopes to have Diao back for the visit of Inter, but accepted the alternative is that the forward only returns after the next international break.

Why Fiorentina poses a different problem

Sunday's trip to the Stadio Artemio Franchi brings Como up against a Fiorentina side Fabregas described in positive terms. "Paolo Vanoli is an excellent coach and has a strong squad at his disposal, they are getting better with each game that goes by," he said, adding that it is "always a difficult and interesting game to prepare in Florence."

Vanoli's side improving week on week changes the calculation for a Como team already missing two attacking outlets. A weaker build-up presence in behind means Como are less likely to stretch Fiorentina's backline in transition, which in turn invites more sustained pressure in the other direction, exactly the kind of spell a team short of its first-choice front two wants to avoid.

Como's recent Serie A form adds to the concern: one point from their last two league matches, a run that predates the Feyenoord defeat but has not been reversed by it.

The congestion Como signed up for

Fabregas was careful to frame the dip as part of a wider adjustment rather than a crisis. "We are well aware that this season is a new experience for everybody. We are in a period of adaptation that we had very clear in our minds before the campaign kicked off," he said.

That adaptation is as much about scheduling as tactics. Como are navigating Champions League football for the first time, and the travel and recovery demands of a midweek trip to Rotterdam followed by a Sunday league fixture in Florence are the clearest example of why rotation becomes unavoidable rather than optional in a squad of this size.

Fabregas's own description of the campaign captures that trade-off. "We are slowly getting the hang of this schedule, the important thing is not how we start the season, but how we finish it," he said.

With Kean possibly back within days and Diao targeted for the Inter fixture, Como's immediate challenge is to find a workable attacking shape at the Franchi without either of their first-choice forwards available.
