Gasperini banks on Cristante's versatility for Roma's trip to Naples

Gian Piero Gasperini explains how Bryan Cristante's return offers Roma tactical options against Napoli, even as the squad absorbs another serious injury.

Gian Piero Gasperini says Bryan Cristante's return to the Roma midfield gives him options he has missed, as his side travel to face Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

The match kicks off at 17.00 UK time, 18.00 CEST, with Roma arriving on the back of a 4-0 Champions League win over Slovan Bratislava in midweek, Football Italia reports.

That victory came at a cost. Lorenzo Pellegrini suffered a serious thigh tear during the game and will be out for several months, adding his name to an absentee list that already includes Paulo Dybala, Manu Koné and Mile Svilar.

Why Cristante changes Roma's midfield math

Cristante starts for the first time in more than a month, and Gasperini was clear about what that restores to his setup. Speaking to DAZN Italia, the coach said repeated injuries had forced Roma to rely on the same personnel in that midfield role, and that Cristante's presence lets the team shift shape mid-match.

"He also makes us a more versatile team, because we can play with two in midfield and push someone else forward. He can give us different variables during the match," Gasperini said.

That flexibility matters because Roma face a specific tactical puzzle in Naples. Gasperini has not settled on whether Cristante or Niccolò Pisilli will take the more advanced role behind Donyell Malen and Matias Soulé, and the uncertainty is tied directly to Napoli's own system.

Kevin De Bruyne operates as Napoli's playmaker, and it remains possible that Cristante is deployed specifically to track him rather than hold a fixed attacking berth. A player capable of dropping into a double pivot one moment and pushing forward the next is useful precisely because he can switch between a man-marking job and a more conventional midfield role without Roma needing to make a substitution to do it.

That is the practical value of what Gasperini calls variables: the same personnel can produce different defensive and attacking structures depending on how the opponent is set up, without tipping Roma's hand before kick-off.

A fixture Roma have struggled to win on the road

History gives extra weight to the occasion. Roma have not beaten Napoli since a 2-0 home win in December 2023, a run that has since produced three draws and two defeats.

Their away record in Naples is worse still. The last Roma win at the venue was a 4-2 result in March 2018, and since then the fixture has delivered four draws and four more defeats for the visitors.

Gasperini framed the game as a measure of where his Roma side currently stand. "It is early days in the season, but undoubtedly if we win away to Napoli, it would be another show of strength and a big push forward in terms of self-belief," he said.

He also set the fixture in context before that: "It's a top level fixture with many important players, two of the best teams in the league, so it's a big game."

What the injury list means beyond this match

The accumulation of absentees changes the calculation for Gasperini well beyond Naples. With Dybala, Koné, Svilar and now Pellegrini unavailable, the coach has fewer like-for-like replacements if Cristante or Pisilli pick up knocks of their own.

That scarcity is exactly why Gasperini values a player who can occupy more than one role. A squad already missing four first-team options cannot easily absorb further injuries to the midfield, which makes Cristante's capacity to play as part of a double pivot or push into a more advanced role a practical necessity rather than a tactical luxury.

Roma's result in Naples will say as much about squad management as about the system Gasperini chooses to field, given how thin his options have become in a matter of days.
