Manchester City favourites as WSL derby tests their defensive discipline
Opta's supercomputer makes City slight favourites to extend their perfect start against a resurgent Manchester United, but their defensive wobble against Brighton offers a warning sign.
Manchester City arrive at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday as favourites in Opta's supercomputer model, which gives Andrée Jeglertz's side a 47% probability of victory in the first Manchester derby of the 2026-27 Women's Super League season, according to The Analyst.
A win would take City to seven victories from seven to open the campaign, matching the club-best start they managed in 2017-18.
That form has not come without alarm. City led Brighton 3-0 inside 17 minutes last weekend through a Khadija Shaw brace and a first City goal for summer signing Niamh Charles, the fastest they had scored three in a WSL match since April 2022, also against Brighton.
Why the Brighton scare matters for City
Brighton clawed back to 3-2 through Olivia Garcia and Caitlin Hayes, forcing City to see out a nervy finish. The collapse points to a recurring issue in defensive transition once City have established control of a game: a dominant opening can unravel quickly if the press and recovery shape drop off after the initial burst of scoring.
Jeglertz has already shown he is willing to address such lapses through personnel changes. City have made 18 changes to their starting lineup in the league this season, more than any other WSL club, and he may again shuffle his XI to manage the balance between attacking intent and defensive solidity against a United side gaining confidence.
There is a personal landmark attached to the fixture too. Shaw is set to win her 100th WSL cap, becoming the first player to reach that mark in a Manchester derby. Having scored in five of her six league starts this season — against Birmingham City, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Arsenal and Brighton — she could become the first player in WSL history to score in each of her first six starts of a campaign.
Hemp's creative numbers underline City's reliance on their spine
Lauren Hemp leads the WSL for chances created this season with 19, a figure that measures the number of passes or set-piece deliveries leading directly to a shot. Twelve of those have gone to Shaw, three converting into assists — no other player in the division has created as many as five chances for a single teammate.
Hemp is also one goal involvement away from reaching 100 for City in the competition (48 goals, 51 assists), a mark that would make her only the fourth player to register a century of goal involvements for a single WSL club, per The Analyst.
United's rebuild under Olid shows in the passing numbers
United's own trajectory has shifted sharply. After taking one point from their opening three league games, Eva Olid's side have won three in a row, including a 3-1 victory over bottom-placed Charlton Athletic in which Ella Toone, Andrea Medina and Julia Zigiotti Olme all scored inside the first 31 minutes — only the fourth instance in WSL history of a United side scoring that many goals that quickly, and the first since September 2022.
The numbers behind that win reflect a genuine change in approach. United completed 700 passes against Charlton at 88.7% accuracy, with a 76.2% share of possession — all season highs for the club, and the highest pass count by any WSL side since Arsenal's 707 against Crystal Palace in January 2025. Those figures suggest United are now building attacks through sustained possession rather than relying on transitions, a shift that will be tested against a City side comfortable pressing high.
United's stability in selection contrasts with City's rotation. Olid's side have made only five lineup changes this season, fewer than every club bar Tottenham (four), and could field an unchanged starting XI for a fourth consecutive league game for the first time since the start of 2021-22.
Toone's derby pedigree adds further intrigue. Her goal against Charlton drew her level with Leah Galton as United's all-time leading WSL scorer on 35, and she has made more appearances in Manchester derbies (12) than any other player, with five goal involvements in those matches — a tally bettered only by one other player.
City have won the past two meetings 3-0 both home and away and could become the first side in this fixture to win three straight WSL derbies. United's recent form, built on patient possession and faster starts, gives them a platform to break that run, but City's attacking spine of Shaw and Hemp remains the most direct route to a result either way.
