PSG's first-half blitz leaves Guardiola's Etihad return in ruins
Paris Saint-Germain scored three times in 32 first-half minutes and held off a Manchester City fightback led by Erling Haaland to win 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City conceded three goals in the first half of a Champions League tie for the first time since 2015, as Paris Saint-Germain raced into a commanding lead before holding on to win 4-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, according to The Analyst (Opta).
The result marked Pep Guardiola's first visit back to his former home since leaving City at the end of last season. He watched from the away technical area as his old club fell three goals behind inside 32 minutes.
Désiré Doué opened the scoring after racing onto a Fabián Ruiz pass, cutting in from the left and finding the bottom corner. Ousmane Dembélé doubled the lead less than two minutes later, heading in from close range after combining with Doué.
Vitinha completed the rout before half-time, driving a first-time shot in from the edge of the box. City had chances of their own in that opening period: Antoine Semenyo blazed over a rebound after the crossbar denied him, and Achraf Hakimi struck the woodwork at the other end for PSG.
Why the first half unravelled so completely
City's defensive structure simply could not cope with the speed of PSG's transitions. Doué and Dembélé combined for the second goal within seconds of City failing to clear their lines, and Vitinha's third arrived from distance after City were caught overcommitted.
By half-time, PSG had managed seven shots on target from ten attempts in the opening 45 minutes, per The Analyst (Opta). It was the first time City had trailed by three goals at half-time in a home fixture since a January 2012 FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Enzo Maresca responded immediately, bringing on Matheus Nunes, Ayyoub Bouaddi and Iliman Ndiaye at the interval. The substitutions changed City's attacking rhythm and shifted the balance of the match for the remainder of the night.
Haaland's double could not undo the damage
Ndiaye's cross found Erling Haaland in the 53rd minute, and the Norwegian headed home to cut the deficit. Fifty-seven seconds after a Donnarumma error let in Maghnes Akliouche for City's second goal, Haaland swept in a finish from Bouaddi's cutback to make it 3-2.
Donnarumma had got a strong hand to Akliouche's shot but could only push it up and over the line, unable to recover in time to clear it.
City pressed hard for an equaliser. Joskov Gvardiol saw an effort cleared off the line, Enzo Fernández struck the frame of the goal, and Haaland headed against the crossbar from a corner. Haaland then had a glaring chance for a hat-trick in the 83rd minute but directed a sliding effort straight at Matvey Safonov.
Former City forward Ferran Torres missed a penalty that would have sealed the win for PSG, firing tamely at Donnarumma after Nunes fouled Nuno Mendes. City could not punish the miss, and PSG held on for the 4-2 victory.
What the numbers say about City's response
City finished the match with 27 shots, amounting to a combined expected goals figure of 2.57, with 1.78 of that total generated after the break, per The Analyst (Opta). Haaland had eight attempts on goal, Semenyo six and Ndiaye four.
The second-half surge reflects a team that restructured effectively at half-time, but the underlying numbers also show how much ground City had to make up after conceding three goals before the 32nd minute.
Haaland's two goals moved him above Sergio Agüero as City's all-time leading scorer in the Champions League. His second strike took him to 61 goals in 60 Champions League appearances overall, 38 of them for City in just 41 matches for the club.
Dembélé's goal made him only the third player to score in six or more consecutive Champions League appearances for Paris Saint-Germain, following Kylian Mbappé in September 2022 and Edinson Cavani in October 2017, per The Analyst (Opta).
City have never before conceded four goals in a home game in any European competition. PSG, meanwhile, have now scored ten goals in their opening two Champions League matches this season, a tally no side has previously reached at that stage of the competition, and they remain unbeaten in ten Champions League matches against English opposition, winning eight and drawing two.
