Messi's wall-pass winner keeps Inter Miami's golden boot and playoff hopes alive

A trademark give-and-go goal from Lionel Messi sealed a comeback win over New England Revolution and sharpened Miami's run-in, Planet Football reports.

Lionel Messi scored the winner as Inter Miami came from behind to beat New England Revolution, a goal that doubled as a reminder of why defenders still cannot contain him at 39, according to Planet Football.

The goal arrived in the 83rd minute. A pass was fizzed into Messi with a defender already draped across his back, tight marking that would stop most forwards from even receiving the ball cleanly.

How Messi turned pressure into space

What followed is the detail worth isolating. Messi used his strength to shift the marker off balance, buying himself just enough room to turn and face goal rather than be forced backwards or sideways.

From there he played a quick exchange with teammate Telasco Segovia, flicking the ball past the recovering defender and using Segovia as a one-touch wall to receive it back inside the box. It is a classic give-and-go, but the value of it here was timing: the return pass arrived as the defensive line was still resetting, giving Messi a half-second of space he turned into a clean finish placed into the far corner, across the goalkeeper.

None of the individual elements — the hold-up strength, the one-two, the finish — is new from Messi. What the move shows is that the decision-making under direct physical pressure, the instinct to use a teammate rather than force a dribble through a crowded box, has not eroded with age.

What the goal means for the Golden Boot race

The finish was Messi's 26th goal of the MLS season, moving him four clear at the top of the league's scoring charts, Planet Football reports. Across 30 matches this season he has 39 goal involvements, a tally 12 clear of the next-best player in the league.

A repeat title is within reach. Messi won last season's Golden Boot with 29 goals, a mark no player has matched in consecutive seasons since MLS adopted its current scoring format in 2005. Three more goals in the final regular-season match would draw him level with that total.

The playoff picture Miami are navigating

The win did not move Inter Miami to the top of the Eastern Conference. Nashville sit 15 points clear with a single regular-season match remaining, meaning the conference title is already decided. Miami have, however, already secured their place in the play-off round regardless of how the final fixture goes.

Their seeding is still live. Miami could slip to third place, with New England Revolution just a point behind after Sunday's defeat. Revolution's final match is away at Orlando City on the league's closing weekend, a fixture that could reshape where Miami land in the bracket.

Miami's own final game is against Charlotte, currently fifth in the Eastern Conference. The most probable outcome of the run-in is a play-off meeting between Miami and FC Cincinnati, Planet Football reports, which would put Messi in pursuit of a second MLS Cup.

There is also a subplot built around Antoine Griezmann, Messi's former Barcelona teammate, who has started strongly for Orlando City since joining from Atletico Madrid in the summer. Orlando currently sit ninth in the Eastern Conference, holding the conference's final play-off spot.

MLS's play-off structure pairs the ninth seed against the eighth seed, with the winner then facing the top seed. For a Messi-Griezmann meeting to happen in that bracket, Orlando would need to climb to seventh — which would require an improbable ten-goal swing over Cincinnati in the goal-differential standings used for seeding, according to Planet Football.

Miami's path to a second MLS Cup under Messi looks more likely to run through Cincinnati than Orlando. Last season offers the template: Miami finished third in the Eastern Conference yet won all three play-off matches, including an 8-3 win over Nashville, before beating the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final to lift the trophy.
