Cagliari end losing run as Adopo's strike silences in-form Frosinone
Michel Adopo's first-half finish gave a crisis-hit Cagliari side a 1-0 win over sixth-placed Frosinone, who dominated possession and shots but could not beat Elia Caprile.
Cagliari stopped a six-match winless run by beating Frosinone 1-0 at the Unipol Domus, with Michel Adopo's 38th-minute strike enough to see off a Canarini side that had won three of their previous four league games, Football Italia reported.
The result arrived with Cagliari in what Football Italia described as total crisis mode, having lost four matches in a row. Adam Obert was suspended, while Yerry Mina, M'Bala Nzola, Alieu Fadera, Riyad Idrissi and Mattia Felici were all unavailable through injury.
Yael Trepy made his first start since an incident on August 17 that Football Italia described as him almost drowning, only to limp off after 27 minutes with a suspected hamstring strain.
A moment of quality from a depleted side
Trepy had already tested Lorenzo Palmisani from distance before his withdrawal, and Cagliari's breakthrough came from a sharper piece of football than the circumstances around the team suggested was likely.
Adopo combined with Paul Mendy in central midfield, carried the ball to the edge of the box himself, and finished with a right-footed strike into the top corner. It was the kind of individual action that a side missing six first-team players through injury or suspension cannot always rely on producing, and it proved decisive.
The goal came against the balance of play. Frosinone had already had Fares Ghedjemis shoot from range, and Giacomo Calò forced two difficult saves from Elia Caprile with efforts from distance, before Cagliari's transition cut through them.
Frosinone tilted the pitch but not the scoreline
The match statistics tell a clear story of territorial dominance that did not translate into goals. Frosinone had 64 percent of possession to Cagliari's 36, and outshot the hosts 29 to 14, with nine shots on target against Cagliari's four, according to Football Italia's figures.
Frosinone also won 13 corners to Cagliari's three. That volume of service into the box, paired with Cagliari's low defensive block for long spells, created repeated half-chances without the final touch to match.
Kevin Carlos summed up that profligacy late on, blazing over the bar when presented with the opportunity to level the match. For a side that had been climbing the table into sixth place, the inability to convert control of the ball into a point will be the more frustrating part of the afternoon.
Frosinone were already without top scorer Antonio Raimondo, who sprained an ankle, and Florian Grillitsch remained sidelined, both factors that may have blunted their attacking sharpness in the final third even as they controlled the game's tempo.
Two goalkeepers kept the scoreline from shifting
Both goalkeepers were central to the result staying as it was. Palmisani produced what Football Italia called a simply extraordinary reaction save to deny Mendy a close-range tap-in from a corner shortly after half-time, keeping Frosinone within touching distance.
At the other end, Caprile was repeatedly called upon. He denied Calò after a Ghedjemis pull-back from the byline, and then produced the decisive stop of the match in the 73rd minute, when Matteo Cichella's close-range effort from a corner was fingertipped onto the underside of the bar before Caprile also blocked the follow-up from Daniel Birligea.
Birligea was denied again soon after by a defensive block from Raphael Kofler at the near post, a reminder that Cagliari's resistance was not down to Caprile alone. The combination of goalkeeping and committed blocking defending absorbed a period of sustained Frosinone pressure that, on another day, would likely have produced an equaliser.
The win lifts Cagliari out of their run of four straight defeats and gives a short-handed squad a result to build on heading into their next fixtures, while Frosinone's push up the table hits a stumbling block against opposition they heavily outplayed by the numbers but could not break down.
