Roma's set-piece collapse hands Mourinho's Real Madrid a stunning win
Roma led 3-1 with seven minutes left but conceded three corner-kick goals in a row as Real Madrid completed a 4-3 comeback at the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma built a position few teams manage against Real Madrid, only to surrender it inside seven minutes. Leading 3-1 in their first Champions League home fixture in seven years, Mourinho's former side conceded three goals from corners in quick succession and lost 4-3, a result that leaves them with one point from two games in the League Phase.
The pattern of the collapse is the real story here, more than the scoreline itself. Carlos Espí pulled one back in the 83rd minute, and Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger followed with near-identical finishes from corner kicks soon after, according to Football Italia. Three set pieces, three goals, inside the same passage of play against a side that had controlled much of the match.
How Roma lost control of their own corners
Until that sequence, Roma had been the better team for long stretches. Marten de Roon gave them a deserved lead in the 20th minute with a first-time strike from outside the box that deflected past Thibaut Courtois, according to The Analyst (Opta). Matías Soulé had curled narrowly wide inside the first minute, and Mario Hermoso saw an effort tipped away by Courtois at full stretch.
Real Madrid's route back into the game before half-time came from a different source entirely. Kylian Mbappé, playing his 100th Champions League match, punished a Hermoso error to equalise, a goal that also brought up his 500th club goal involvement, with 378 goals and 122 assists, per The Analyst.
Donyell Malen then put Roma back in command with two goals in six second-half minutes, the first arriving after a pass from Rodrigo Mora and the second set up by Soulé himself. Mbappé had a goal ruled out shortly after the hour, and at that point Roma looked set to close the game out. Instead, the same defensive mechanism failed three times over in the closing stages, as corner after corner went unmarked or uncleared, letting substitutes Espí and Endrick in before Rüdiger completed the turnaround.
Mourinho and Rüdiger turn the old club over
There was a layer to the result beyond the tactics. José Mourinho, once Roma's manager, returned to the Stadio Olimpico and left with a win built on a comeback inspired partly by a player who used to wear the Roma shirt, with Rüdiger scoring the decisive goal, as reported by Guardian Football. For Mourinho it was a reunion that ended exactly as he would have wanted, regardless of how the first 83 minutes had gone.
The identity of the matchwinner adds an edge to the collapse. Rüdiger knows the Stadio Olimpico and knows Roma's dressing room, and it was his header from a corner that finished off a sequence Roma should never have allowed to develop in the first place.
Soulé calls it a mentality problem
Soulé did not look for mitigating circumstances afterwards. He described the defeat as being entirely in Roma's hands before they gave it away on three corner kicks, speaking to Amazon Prime Video Italia and relayed by Football Italia. He said the only explanation for conceding three practically identical goals in seven minutes was a question of mentality, and called for his side to stay fully focused for the full 90 minutes plus stoppage time.
That framing matters because it rules out a simple tactical fix. Conceding once from a corner can be an individual error. Conceding three times in the same way, against the same kind of delivery, points to a collective lapse in concentration rather than a single marking assignment going wrong. Soulé's own words suggest the players see it the same way: not a system failure so much as a loss of focus at the moment the game was there to be won.
Roma now sit on one point from their opening two Champions League fixtures, a return that undersells the quality they showed for long periods against a Real Madrid side still in the European Cup's upper bracket of contenders. The next league-phase fixture will be the test of whether Soulé's hoped-for lesson actually changes anything, or whether Wednesday's seven minutes become the defining image of Roma's campaign.
